Moti Quotes has no accounts. You never sign up, so I never learn your name or your email. There’s no advertising ID in the app and nothing about you gets sold or handed to anyone.
What I do collect is a small daily count of how the app is being used. It’s tied to a random number that lives on your phone and disappears when you delete the app. Here’s exactly what that means.
What Never Leaves Your Phone#
Your notification time, the days you picked, your bookmarks, and your font and size settings. All of that sits on your device. None of it is sent anywhere.
What Gets Sent#
Once a day, when you open the app, it sends one row of numbers. That row has a random install ID, today’s date, when you installed the app, how many days ago that was, your app version and platform, whether you opened it from a notification, whether notifications are allowed, what hour yours is set to, how many days you’ve opened the app, your current and longest streak, how many quotes you’ve bookmarked, shared and submitted, which font you use, and whether you’ve touched the size slider.
I’m trying to answer one question with all of that: do people keep using this thing after they install it. My last app ran for years and I never once measured that, and I regretted it.
The app also sends a count of how often each quote gets bookmarked or shared. It’s a quote ID, a date, and two numbers. Your install ID isn’t attached, so those can’t be traced back to your phone.
And when you submit a quote, it sends what you wrote. Your name goes with it only if you picked “Use my name” on that screen.
About That Random ID#
It’s a random string of characters the app generates the first time you open it. It isn’t Apple’s advertising identifier, it isn’t the vendor ID, and no ad network would recognise it. All it does is let me tell that today’s row and yesterday’s row came from the same phone. That’s it.
Delete the app and it’s gone. Reinstall and you get a fresh one with no link to the old.
What I Don’t Collect#
No name or email, unless you type one into a quote or email me yourself. No contacts. No location. No photos, health data, calendar or microphone. Nothing that follows you into other apps or websites. I don’t sell any of this and I don’t share it with ad networks or data brokers.
Ads#
There aren’t any right now. If I add them later I’ll update this page first, along with the privacy label on the App Store. I’m not going to change that quietly.
Where It’s Stored#
Everything above sits in a database run by a hosting provider I pay for. I’m the only person who looks at it, and it doesn’t get passed on to anyone else.
The one exception is quotes that get published. Those become part of the app’s library, with your name on them if you asked for credit. That’s the point of sending one in, and it’s the only thing you give me that other people ever see.
How Long I Keep It#
The daily numbers stick around while I’m still working on the app, because I need something to judge changes against. Submitted quotes stay until I either publish them or pass on them.
What You Can Do About It#
Deleting the app stops the daily numbers. There’s no separate switch for it yet, and I’d like to add one. You can turn notifications off in the app or in iOS Settings whenever you want, and nobody has to submit anything.
Want a quote you sent in taken down? Email support@chesonglee.com with the text and I’ll remove it. I can’t do the same for the daily numbers, because there’s nothing in them that tells me which ones are yours. Deleting the app is what stops those.
Depending on where you live you may have the right to ask what I hold about you and have it deleted. Write to me and I’ll do what I can, though for most of this the honest answer is that there’s nothing identifiable to find.
If This Changes#
The date at the top changes with it. Anything significant will show up in the app’s release notes too.
